The transportation sector is the second largest source of CO2 emissions, after electricity and heating generation, accounting for 25 percent of global emissions. However, it is also one of the sectors where decarbonization poses the most challenges, due to its ubiquity and the advantages of using fossil fuels in terms of energy density and ease of storage and transport. Hydrogen from renewable sources holds promise in sustainable mobility applications, whether for fuel cell electric vehicles such as cars, trucks and trains, or as a feedstock for synthetic fuels for ships and aircraft. From an innovation perspective, it will be critical to reduce costs and improve performance, but technological challenges related to hydrogen weight and storage must also be solved, especially in the ship and aircraft sectors. This symposium will present and discuss some recent developments on the role of hydrogen in the mobility sector in Italy. |
